Verkocht en verknocht

“Gelukkig hebben wij de foto’s nog!” Aan deze uitspraak moest ik onlangs denken toen ik mijn website weer eens onder handen nam. Tja, eens in de zoveel tijd vind ik het nodig om er de nodige aanpassingen aan te doen. Dit keer was het onder andere het aanvullen van mijn portfolio met foto’s gemaak tijdens onze reizen. Ja, en dan komen veel dierbare herinneringen naar boven. Vooral bij het zien van de foto’s van onze toertochten met de camper door Schotland en Skye. De eerste maal dat wij naar het prachtige Schotland gingen was in 1982. Wij genoten niet alleen van het landschap en de mensen, maar vooral ook van de rust. Wij hoefden nergens op zoek te gaan naar een plekje op een camping, ja zelfs wildkamperen was praktisch overal toegestaan. De hotspots van Schotland en Skye deelden wij slechts met dieren (vooral met heel veel midges!) en een handjevol mensen. Wij waren verkochten verknocht.

Sold and devoted

“Fortunately we still have the photos!” I was reminded of this statement recently when I once again overhauled my website. Well, once in a while I find it necessary to make the necessary adjustments. This time it was among other things to supplement my portfolio with photos taken during our travels. Yes, and then many fond memories come to mind. Especially when looking at the photos of our motorhome tours through Scotland and Skye. The first time we went to beautiful Scotland was in 1982. We enjoyed not only the landscape and the people, but also the peace and quiet. We didn’t have to look for a spot on a campsite anywhere, yes, even wild camping was allowed practically everywhere. We only shared the hotspots of Scotland and Skye with animals (especially with a lot of midges!) and a handful of people. We were sold and devoted.

Lock down

Jaren later, in 2016, maakten wij opnieuw de overtocht van IJmuiden naar New Castle. Opnieuw genoten wij van Schotland, van het landschap, de mensen en ….. de rust. Toch was het merkbaar dat meer toeristen Schotland en vooral Skye hadden ontdekt. In 2019, de laatste maal dat wij er waren leek het erop dat praktisch iedereen met een camper op weg was. Vooral Skye had veel moeite om al die huizen op wielen te herbergen. Met name bij de hotspots stonden overal, ook waar dit niet was toegestaan, campers geparkeerd. Ondanks de drukte wilden wij in 2020 opnieuw naar het Verenigd Koninkrijk en dit maal voor het eerst naar Wales. Alles was geregeld; de overtocht van Europoort naar Hull en de route die wij zouden volgen in de camper. Het liep helaas allemaal anders dat jaar. De wereld kreeg eind 2019 te maken met Covid en ging, onder andere, ons geliefde vakantieland op slot!

Lock down

Years later, in 2016, we again made the crossing from IJmuiden to New Castle. Once again we enjoyed Scotland, the landscape, the people and ….. the peace and quiet. Still, it was noticeable that more tourists had discovered Scotland and especially Skye. In 2019, the last time we were there, it seemed that practically everyone was on the road with a camper. Skye, in particular, struggled to accommodate all those houses on wheels. Especially at the hotspots, campers were parked everywhere, even where this was not allowed. Despite the crowds, we wanted to go to the United Kingdom again in 2020 and this time to Wales for the first time. Everything was arranged; the crossing from Europoort to Hull and the route we would follow in the camper. Unfortunately, things turned out differently that year. The world had to deal with Covid at the end of 2019 and, among other things, our beloved holiday country was locked down!

Wie weet

Uiteraard hoopten wij op een herkansing. P&O liet weten onze tickets te bewaren. Toch liep het allemaal anders. Anders dan dat wij hadden gehoopt. Wij konden, of beter gezegd durfden, door allerlei nare politieke en economische ontwikkelingen niet meer naar het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Of het er ooit voor ons nog van komt om de oversteek te maken?? Hoe dan ook…….gelukkig hebben wij de foto’s nog!

Who knows

Of course we hoped for a rematch. P&O informed us that they are saving our tickets. Yet it all turned out differently. Different than we had hoped. Due to all kinds of nasty political and economic developments, we were no longer able to, or rather dared to say, no longer able to go to the United Kingdom. Whether it will ever happen for us to make the crossing, who knows? Anyway……. luckily we still have the pictures!
